Business Immigration

Canada offers several business immigration programs for individuals who wish to invest, establish, or manage a business in the country. These programs are designed to attract entrepreneurs, investors, and self-employed individuals who can contribute to the Canadian economy. Here are some key business immigration programs in Canada:

  1. Start-Up Visa Program:
    • This program is for entrepreneurs who have a viable business idea and can secure funding and support from designated organizations in Canada.
    • Applicants must obtain a commitment from a designated organization, such as a venture capital fund, angel investor group, or business incubator, to invest in and support their business idea.
  2. Self-Employed Persons Program:
    • This program is for individuals with relevant experience in cultural activities, athletics, or farm management who intend to be self-employed in Canada.
    • Applicants must demonstrate that they have relevant experience and the intention and ability to be self-employed in Canada.
  3. Immigrant Investor Programs (IIPs):
    • The federal Immigrant Investor Program was terminated, but some provinces operate their own investor programs.
    • For example, the Quebec Immigrant Investor Program (QIIP) allows investors to obtain Canadian permanent residency by making a passive investment. Note that these programs often have specific financial requirements.
  4. Entrepreneur Programs:
    • Some provinces have entrepreneur immigration programs that target individuals willing to establish and actively manage a business in that province.
    • These programs typically require a business plan, a minimum investment, and a commitment to create jobs for Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  5. Owner-Operator LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment):
    • This option allows foreign entrepreneurs to purchase or establish a business in Canada and operate it while securing a work permit under the owner-operator LMIA category.
    • The entrepreneur must be actively involved in the day-to-day management of the business.
  6. Intra-Company Transfers:
    • For individuals who are executives, managers, or specialized knowledge workers within a multinational company, intra-company transfers allow them to work in Canada under certain conditions.

It’s important to note that the specific requirements and availability of these programs may vary, and eligibility criteria often depend on factors such as business experience, investment amount, and the type of business. Prospective immigrants are advised to carefully review the criteria of the relevant program and, if necessary, seek professional advice to navigate the complexities of business immigration in Canada. Additionally, immigration policies and programs can change, so it’s crucial to stay updated with the latest information.
